Not every golf break needs to be on the North Norfolk coast. For groups combining a city visit with their golf — or for those who want a base with easy access to multiple courses — Norwich and its surrounds offer several excellent stay and play options that are often overlooked in favour of the coastal clubs.
Here are our picks for stay and play golf within easy reach of Norwich, including a course we played recently for the first time and came away genuinely impressed.
Bawburgh Golf Club
Discovery Tier · West Norwich
Bawburgh Golf Club
Bawburgh sits just west of Norwich in a pleasant parkland setting — easy to reach from the city, unhurried in atmosphere, and with a course that rewards proper golf rather than just a hitting session. We played it recently and found it genuinely enjoyable throughout: good variety across the holes, well-maintained greens, and a club that takes its golf seriously without being stuffy about it.
The practice facilities are a real asset — a proper driving range and practice area that makes Bawburgh a useful destination for groups where improving their game is as much a part of the trip as the round itself. The lodges on site make it a clean, self-contained stay and play option — particularly useful for smaller groups who want flexibility and their own space rather than a hotel.
Bawburgh pairs well with Royal Norwich or Sprowston Manor for a two-round Norwich-based break, or as a relaxed addition to a longer Norfolk itinerary. We'll have photography from Bawburgh on the site shortly. In the meantime, see our full Norfolk courses page for all our Discovery tier recommendations.
Sprowston Manor Hotel & Golf Club
Discovery Tier · North-East Norwich
Sprowston Manor
The hotel and spa element makes Sprowston Manor a natural choice for groups that include non-golfers or those wanting a more structured hotel experience alongside their golf. The course itself is a solid parkland layout on the edge of Norwich — not championship-level, but pleasantly challenging and well-presented. The spa facilities make this a popular choice for mixed groups.
Royal Norwich Golf Club
Discovery Tier · Norwich
Royal Norwich
The recently redesigned Royal Norwich is a more serious golf proposition than the other options on this list — a modern parkland course that has genuine ambition and is already earning a strong reputation among local players. Not a stay and play venue in itself, but an excellent course to combine with Bawburgh or Sprowston for a two-round Norwich break.
Planning a Norwich Golf Break
The appeal of a Norwich-based golf break is the flexibility it offers — easy city access, multiple courses within 20–30 minutes, and the ability to combine golf with Norwich's excellent food and drink scene, the Cathedral, or the Norfolk Broads if partners are joining. It's a different proposition to the North Norfolk coast, but a very worthwhile one.
For groups who want the full Norfolk experience, we'd typically combine one or two Norwich-area rounds with the North Norfolk coast itinerary — a four or five day trip that covers the best of both. See our itineraries page for full details, or get in touch and we'll design something around your group.
