Royal West Norfolk:
A Visitor's Complete Guide

There are golf courses that are pleasant, golf courses that are memorable — and then there is Royal West Norfolk. Sitting at the end of a tidal causeway at Brancaster on the North Norfolk coast, this is one of the finest and most distinctive links in England, and for serious golfers visiting East Anglia, it is an essential pilgrimage.

It is not the longest course, nor the most famous on the national stage. What it is, is utterly itself — a links that has changed little in over a century, where the tide dictates your access, the marsh defines your horizon, and the North Sea wind writes the scorecard before you've even teed off. Visiting here feels like stepping into golf's history.

"The tide dictates your access, the marsh defines your horizon, and the North Sea wind writes the scorecard before you've even teed off."

The Course & Setting

Royal West Norfolk occupies a narrow strip of land between Brancaster Marsh and the sea, with the fairways running back and forth along this sliver of coast. The terrain is pure links — firm, fast, undulating turf with sleeper-faced bunkers and the kind of natural contours that modern course architecture tries and fails to replicate.

The signature feature is the sequence of holes that play across the marsh with nothing but wooden boards for a path. At high tide, portions of the course are inaccessible — which is not an inconvenience but part of the character. It means that no two visits are the same, and that the course demands you play the conditions rather than a fixed template.

Visitor Access

Royal West Norfolk is a private members' club and visitor access is carefully managed and limited. This is not a course you can simply book online — and rightly so. Visitor rounds are available on weekdays, typically outside peak member times, and must be arranged in advance. Demand consistently exceeds availability, particularly in the summer months.

This is where we add real value. As a specialist operator with an established relationship with the club, Golf East Anglia can arrange visitor access as part of a curated Norfolk golf break itinerary — taking the uncertainty out of securing a tee time and ensuring your visit fits properly into a wider programme of courses and accommodation.

Visitor Essentials

  • Visitor Days: Weekdays only — limited availability
  • Handicap Required: Yes — CDH number or equivalent
  • Dress Code: Smart traditional — collared shirts, tailored trousers or shorts
  • Buggy Hire: Not available — links golf is walking golf
  • Caddy: Arrange in advance — highly recommended for first visit
  • Best Access: Via Golf East Anglia as part of a curated itinerary
  • Nearest Accommodation: Brancaster, Burnham Market, Hunstanton

When to Play

Royal West Norfolk plays well year-round, but the sweet spots are late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October). The links turf is at its firmest and fastest from July through October, and the longer days of summer give you the best of the evening light on the marshes.

Winter golf here is for the committed — it can be raw on the North Norfolk coast — but there is a particular magic to a mid-winter round at Brancaster when the marsh is frosted and you have the course largely to yourself. For most visitors, May to October is the window to aim for.

Pairing Royal West Norfolk

No single round does justice to a visit to this part of Norfolk. The North Norfolk coast deserves at least two or three days, and Royal West Norfolk pairs naturally with Royal Cromer to the east — another historic links with dramatic clifftop views — and Hunstanton to the south, a classic west-coast links that sits within easy distance of Brancaster.

For a longer tour combining the best of both counties, our Grand Tour itinerary brings together five courses across five days — a complete East Anglia golf experience that we design and manage in full.
