Suffolk's golf offer is unlike anywhere else in England. True links at the mouth of the River Deben. Heathland classics on fast-draining sandy soil. Gorse-lined fairways playable in every season. Four courses that have shaped the game in this country — and remain almost entirely unknown to the international visitor.
Suffolk is, in many ways, the quiet genius of English golf. Our Suffolk golf itineraries are built to reveal it properly. The courses here — Aldeburgh, Thorpeness, Woodbridge, Felixstowe Ferry — have been praised by the greatest golf writers in the language. Yet the international golfer rarely makes it this far. That is the opportunity — and precisely what Golf East Anglia is built to change.
Our Premium courses represent the depth and quality of Suffolk golf — from the ancient heathland of Aldeburgh to Suffolk's only true links at Felixstowe Ferry. These are the courses at the core of every Suffolk and two-county itinerary.
"Aldeburgh is likewise excellent — one of the finest courses in East Anglia, and greatly to be respected." — Bernard Darwin
Founded in 1884, Aldeburgh is one of the oldest golf clubs in Suffolk and one of the most atmospheric courses on England's east coast. The championship layout sits on an unusual strip of coastal heathland, separated from the tidal Alde estuary by barely a field's width. Gorse-lined fairways run across fast-draining sandy soil, producing turf conditions that hold their quality year-round. The views of the River Alde and the North Sea are a constant companion, and the sense of playing a course that has remained fundamentally unchanged for well over a century gives every round a weight that modern resort courses cannot manufacture.
Handicap required: A valid WHS handicap index is required to play the championship course. We confirm requirements for all group members when booking.
Year-round conditions: Sandy subsoil means the course drains exceptionally well. One of the best winter golf destinations in England.
Pairs naturally with Thorpeness: Just two miles apart — these two courses form the core of any Suffolk itinerary.
The town: Aldeburgh is one of England's most attractive small coastal towns — excellent restaurants and the Snape Maltings concert hall nearby.
"A beautifully maintained heathland course with endless variation to its design — a great challenge to golfers of all abilities."
Thorpeness is perhaps the most charming course in Suffolk, and the one that surprises visitors most. Set beside the eccentric village of Thorpeness — with its House in the Clouds water tower and Meare boating lake — the course is a pure expression of heathland design by one of the game's greatest architects. James Braid's routing makes elegant use of the natural contours of the land, and the sandy subsoil means it is playable and enjoyable in every season. Gorse and heather line every fairway, demanding accuracy and rewarding course management. Just two miles from Aldeburgh, Thorpeness is the natural companion course — and the combination makes for one of the finest two-day golf experiences in England.
The village: Thorpeness itself is worth exploration — an extraordinary planned village built in the 1910s, unlike anything else in England.
Pair with Aldeburgh: Two miles apart. We schedule them on consecutive days as standard.
Accommodation on-site: Thorpeness Hotel sits adjacent to the course — an excellent base for a Suffolk golf break.
Winter golf: Fast-draining sandy turf makes Thorpeness one of England's most reliable courses outside of summer.
Set on high ground in a Suffolk Coastal Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with springy turf, heather, gorse and sandy subsoil that produce conditions of consistent quality. Originally designed by Davie Grant of North Berwick and subsequently shaped by James Braid and Fred Hawtree. The 9-hole Forest Course — rated by many as the finest nine holes in Suffolk — offers a different experience entirely and can be played without a handicap certificate.
The only true links course in Suffolk and one of only 246 true links courses in the world. Founded in 1880 — making it the fifth oldest golf club in England — Felixstowe Ferry sits at the mouth of the River Deben with views across the estuary to historic Bawdsey Manor. The 18-hole Martello Championship course was awarded Championship Venue of the Year by England Golf in 2018. Visitors warmly welcomed throughout the week.
For golfers who know their history, Royal Worlington & Newmarket — the Sacred Nine — is a pilgrimage. Widely regarded as the finest nine-hole course in the world, this Tom Dunn and Harry Colt classic sits on just 40 acres of west Suffolk heathland. Intimate, historic, and unlike any other course in the county. Works beautifully as part of an extended itinerary or as a standalone day. If you know, you know. Read the full story →

Set within the grounds of the Grade I listed Hintlesham Hall, this is Suffolk's most distinguished hotel golf combination — an elegant parkland course in mature woodland, with accommodation in a fine Elizabethan manor house. A natural choice for groups wanting to combine quality golf with a luxury overnight stay mid-tour.
A well-established championship parkland course in north Suffolk, close to the Norfolk border — and a particularly good option for groups travelling between the two counties.
